Christmas quilt patterns: palettes and layouts that read as Christmas

Published 2026-10-15. Updated 2026-10-15.
A Christmas quilt is a familiar block in a Christmas palette, often cut as a holiday shape. Red and green half-square triangles read as Christmas on a captured roundup. So does a four-square in Christmas prints, and a hometown quilt first made in red, white, and blue, then remade in a Christmas collection. The layouts that read as Christmas even when the block is ordinary are a wall hanging, a table runner, a table topper, a tree skirt, a stocking, an ornament, a pillow, and a mug rug.
Palette: what makes the block look like Christmas
Use a Christmas print, or a red and green pair, on a block you already know.
The quilts roundup includes a half-square triangle quilt made with just red and green. The same page shows Four Square in Christmas fabrics, a jelly-roll quilt called Delight from a Christmas chapter, and Pot Luck remade when the Swell Christmas collection arrived. Hometown was first red, white, and blue. The Christmas version is the same pattern in a holiday collection. Scrappy Trip Around the World gets the same treatment: a traditional setting, then Christmas fabrics.
The decorating roundup says almost any pattern is fair game for a Christmas quilt, because the fabrics do the seasonal work. That is the planning rule. Pick the block for the seams you want to sew. Pick the fabric for the holiday.
A light background makes a print star read as a star. The Christmas star table runner pairs print squares with background rectangles and background squares. The print is the star. The background is the space around it. Vintage Holiday prints, named on the stocking tutorial, are the same idea in mini charms: small Christmas prints, sewn as patchwork.
A two-color red and green quilt can still look like a generic two-color quilt if the prints have no Christmas motif and the shape is a bed quilt. The captured red-and-green quilt sits in a roundup of Christmas print projects. Use a print with a tree, a berry, a snowflake, or a greeting, or put the block in a holiday layout. The two-color guide is the seam plan. The fabric choice is what makes it Christmas.
One honest limit: these pages show Christmas print collections and holiday project shapes. They do not publish a required ratio of red to green.
Layouts that read as Christmas
The decorating post lists the shapes people actually put out for the season: pillows, runners, toppers, ornaments, quilts, a wall hanging, stockings, tree skirts, a table runner, and a mug rug. A bed quilt in Christmas fabric is one of those. It is not the only one. A small shape on a table or a wall reads as Christmas faster, because the room already treats that spot as seasonal.
Named projects on the quilts roundup, each a classic setting in holiday fabric:
- Christmas Village Houses pillow
- Hopscotch table topper and a Christmas Figs tree skirt
- Gift Wrap, a lap quilt in Fig Tree fabrics mixed with other collections, from a holiday book
- Four Square, in Christmas fabrics
- A red and green half-square triangle quilt
- Pot Luck in Swell Christmas
- Delight, a jelly-roll quilt
- Christmas Figs block of the month
- Hometown, Christmas version
- Scrappy Trip Around the World in Christmas fabrics
- Home for Christmas wall hanging, and a Sweet Christmas quilt
Half-square triangles for the red and green quilt are on the half-square triangle guide. A four-square is a four-patch setting. Trip Around the World has its own guide.
A sales page at Geta's Quilting Studio lists 15 named patterns: Peppermint Candy, Evergreen, Double Lollipops, Jolly Holiday, Tree Quilt, Ornament, Quilted Seasons, Pleated Tree, Winter Wonderland, Festive Vibes, Frosty Snowflakes, Gift Bag, Holiday Bliss, Enchanted Forest, and Stitched Love. The page groups them as reverse applique, folded trees, patchwork, and small gifts such as coasters, ornaments, tote bags, and wall hangings. That is a collection list, not a free tutorial. Use it as a menu of shapes. Sew the free tutorials below if you want steps you can follow now.
Shabby Fabrics ranks a category titled Free Christmas Quilt Patterns and Sewing Projects. The captured page is the shop menu for that category.
Simple projects, with the tutorials
Three captured tutorials are enough to make a Christmas set from blocks you may already sew.
The patchwork stocking uses a mini charm pack, or at least 40 squares at 2 ½ inches. A straight set is four rows of four squares on top of four rows of six. A diagonal set, the one in the post, uses 34 of those squares on point. Add cuff fabric, stocking backing, lining, and a ribbon or a fabric hanger. Sew the front and back with a quarter-inch seam. This is rows of squares. It is the project to start with if you want straight seams.
The log cabin ornament is strips around a center square, in Christmas scraps. Layer the block on a 6 inch square of batting and a 6 inch square of backing. Quilt, trim even with the block, add a ribbon hanger at a corner, and bind it like a tiny quilt. The post also shows a turn-and-slip finish if you would rather skip binding. Log cabin rounds are the same order as a log cabin quilt, stopped at ornament size.
The star table runner is five star blocks: one large and four small, each built from flying geese. The large star block finishes the piecing at 8 ½ inches square. Each small star block finishes the piecing at 4 ½ inches square. Draw a diagonal on the print squares, stitch, press, and trim the seam allowance to a quarter inch. This adds a triangle unit. Sew the stocking or the ornament first if flying geese are new.
A roundup of small makes names more projects, and the post says many of the tutorials are free. On that page: log cabin potholders, a scrappy nine-patch table runner, pillowcases, stockings, a patchwork gift bag, and ornaments, including a log cabin ornament and heart ornaments. The nine-patch runner is the same unit as the nine-patch guide, in a table length.
After the top is pieced, bind a quilted piece with the binding guide. A wall hanging from one Christmas block follows the mini quilt guide.
A traditional star quilt in everyday fabric is a different project from these holiday layouts. See north point quilt, $8.99, coming soon.
