Patriotic Quilt Patterns: Flag Blocks, Stars, and Red, White, and Blue

Published 2026-10-15. Updated 2026-10-15.
A patriotic quilt in red, white, and blue can be a flag-inspired block, a star set, or stars beside a rail fence. One free flag block finishes at 14 by 20 inches from one fat quarter each of red, white, and blue, with the blue rectangle on the left and red and white strips beside and below it, in the Polka Dot Chair tutorial. Free printables for star and rail layouts are collected on the Generations patriotic page. A Quilt of Valor is a separate award. This guide does not replace those rules.
Flag block: blue field, red and white strips
The Polka Dot Chair block is inspired by the flag and uses its own star and stripe count on purpose. Treat it as a design, not as a regulation flag.
For one block, cut one fat quarter each of red, white, and blue. The finished block is 14 by 20 inches. The blue field is a rectangle cut 6 1/2 by 8 1/2 inches. Red and white strips for the upper section are cut 2 1/2 by 12 1/2 inches. Longer red and white strips across the bottom are cut 2 1/2 by 20 1/2 inches. Those cut sizes are the ones in the flag-block tutorial.
Sew the short red and white strips to each other, then sew the blue rectangle to the left of that unit. Sew the long red and white strips to each other and join that band under the first unit. Alternate red and white so the stripes read as bands, not as a scramble of the same color.
One fat quarter yields seven of the 2 1/2 by 20 1/2 inch strips, or seven of the 2 1/2 by 12 1/2 inch strips, and four of the 6 1/2 by 8 1/2 inch blue pieces, according to the same tutorial. A single block needs only one fat quarter of each color. Extra blocks come from the leftover cuts.
A sample layout of 15 blocks with 2 1/2 inch sashing is about 68 by 82 inches. That layout uses about 1 3/4 yards of sashing and 5/8 yard of binding. Those figures are the tutorial's sample, not a chart for every bed. For bed sizes in general, use the quilt size chart.
Shop pages that rank for this search are catalogs, not this cutting order. Shabby Fabrics lists patriotic kits, runners, and small projects. My Favorite Quilt Store lists patriotic fabrics and kits, including a flag panel and a picnic quilt kit. Use those pages to shop cloth. Use the tutorial above to cut a block.
Star sets and a rail fence
When you want stars instead of a flag field, put the darkest blue in the star points and keep red and white as the ground and the alternate blocks. Two free layouts on the Generations page show the placement.
Country Stars alternates stylized flags with large sawtooth stars in an edge-to-edge set. Rising Stars is two blocks only: a rail fence alternating with a sawtooth star. The sample on that page is rainbow, and the page invites the same two blocks in patriotic reds, whites, and blue. Flags on Parade, marked intermediate and a free download, uses sawtooth stars and Ohio stars and finishes at 72 inches square.
Star Banner is the confident-beginner pick on that page. It is a table runner or wall hanging, and the points are folded corners on squares and rectangles, so you are not trimming piles of triangles first.
If you want the triangle method itself, the sawtooth star quilt block and the Ohio star quilt block walk the units. Half-square triangles for those stars are in the half-square triangle guide. A rail fence beside the stars is the rail fence quilt pattern.
A star quilt built from half-square triangles is a different project from the flag block above.

Free patriotic patterns
Yes, there are free patriotic patterns. The Generations page is a list of free printables in red, white, and blue, including the star and rail designs above, plus flag runners and a waving-flag table runner. Print any template on that page at 100 percent, or with scaling off, and check the 1-inch square on the sheet before you cut a stack.
For a first block, use the flag-block tutorial or the stripe quilt that page describes for a beginning quilter, which is strips only. Star Banner is the Generations design marked confident-beginner friendly.
The honest limit: these free pages give one block or one named design, not a fabric chart for every bed size. Scale a block into a bed only after you count the blocks and the sashing, or follow a pattern that already did that math.
Quilt of Valor is a separate award
To use the name Quilt of Valor, the Quilts of Valor Foundation says the quilt must be a specific size, must have a label with required information, must be awarded, and must be recorded. The foundation's basic requirements call 60 by 80 inches the recommended size, with a minimum of 55 by 65 inches and a maximum of 72 by 90 inches.
That requirements page also says the quilt must be machine or hand quilted, that a tied quilt is not acceptable, and that the label must state the quilt is a Quilt of Valor before it can be awarded and recorded. The same page says to include the name of the recipient, the names of the piecer, quilter, and binder, and the date and location of the award. City and state of residence are included if desired. First and last names may be used. The label may also include simple washing instructions of cold water, mild detergent, use a color catcher initially, and tumble dry low. Religious or political messages may not be on the label.
A patriotic quilt from this guide is not that award. Matching a size range is only one line on the foundation's list. Do not put the foundation's name on a label unless you are following the foundation's own award steps.
Are there any free patterns for patriotic quilts?
Yes. Generations Quilt Patterns hosts a page of free printable patriotic designs, and Polka Dot Chair publishes a free flag-block tutorial that uses one fat quarter each of red, white, and blue.
What are some free patriotic quilt patterns for beginners?
Start with the Polka Dot Chair flag block, which is strips and one blue rectangle, or with Star Banner on the Generations page, which that page calls confident-beginner friendly and builds points from squares and rectangles.
How do I place red, white, and blue in a patriotic quilt?
Put blue on the left as the field of a flag block, with red and white strips beside and below it. For stars, alternate a sawtooth star with a stylized flag or with a rail fence, and let the darkest blue carry the star points.
Is this the same as a Quilt of Valor?
No. A Quilt of Valor is an award from the Quilts of Valor Foundation, with that foundation's own size range and a label that must say Quilt of Valor. A quilt from this guide is a separate project.
