Quilt size chart from crib to king

Published 2026-10-15. Updated 2026-10-15.
A US king quilt is a choice, not one label. On a king mattress of 76 by 80 inches, a quilt that only covers the mattress is 76 by 80 inches. A quilt with about 13 inches of side drop and 13 inches of extra length is the 104 by 93 inch king row. A longer hang is 110 by 108 inches. Measure the mattress you own, including its depth, before you cut.
The chart, and the drop it assumes
Honeybegood publishes US mattress, quilt, and packaged batting sizes in one table. The drop is not printed. It follows from the two columns if the side overhang is equal and the extra length sits at the foot, which matches the comforter idea on the Generations chart: a comforter covers the mattress, and a coverlet is the style with a pillow tuck.
| Bed | Mattress, inches | Quilt, inches | Packaged batting, inches | Side drop, inches | Extra length, inches |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Crib | 28 x 52 | 39 x 54 | 45 x 60 | 5.5 | 2 |
| Twin | 39 x 75 | 65 x 88 | 72 x 90 | 13 | 13 |
| Twin XL | 39 x 80 | 65 x 93 | none listed | 13 | 13 |
| Full | 54 x 75 | 80 x 88 | 81 x 96 | 13 | 13 |
| Queen | 60 x 80 | 86 x 93 | 90 x 108 | 13 | 13 |
| King | 76 to 78 x 80 | 104 x 93 | 120 x 120 | 13 to 14 | 13 |
| California king | 72 x 84 | 100 x 97 | 120 x 120 | 14 | 13 |
Read the side drop as half the difference between quilt width and mattress width. For the twin row, 65 minus 39 is 26, and half of 26 is 13. The extra length is 88 minus 75, which is 13. Twin XL, full, and queen on this chart repeat that 13 inch side drop and 13 inch extra length. Crib is the short-drop row. 39 minus 28 is 11, and half of 11 is 5.5 inches of side drop, with 54 minus 52 leaving 2 inches of extra length. King depends on which mattress width you use. At 76 inches, 104 minus 76 is 28, and half of 28 is 14. At 78 inches, 104 minus 78 is 26, and half of 26 is 13.
Sleep Foundation lists the same full, queen, king, and California king mattress lengths and widths, with one difference on the narrow beds: twin is 38 by 75 inches and twin XL is 38 by 80 inches, one inch narrower than Honeybegood's 39 inch width. Use the measurement on your mattress tag when the charts differ by that inch. Height is not standard. Sleep Foundation says thickness varies by manufacturer, so a thick mattress uses up drop that a thin mattress leaves hanging.
A second chart, with a longer hang
Hailey Stitches publishes a larger set of finished quilt sizes. Against the Sleep Foundation mattresses, those rows assume a longer hang than Honeybegood's 13 inch drop.
| Bed | Hailey quilt, inches | Mattress used for the drop | Side drop, inches | Extra length, inches |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Baby | 30 x 40 | none on the chart | none | none |
| Crib | 36 x 52 | 27.5 x 52 on that page | 4.25 | matched |
| Throw | 50 x 65 | none | none | none |
| Twin | 70 x 90 | 38 x 75 | 16 | 15 |
| Full, chart row | 85 x 108 | 54 x 75 | 15.5 | 33 |
| Full, prose on the same page | 80 x 108 | 54 x 75 | 13 | 33 |
| Queen | 90 x 108 | 60 x 80 | 15 | 28 |
| King | 110 x 108 | 76 x 80 | 17 | 28 |
The crib drop is small because the quilt length matches the mattress length. 36 minus 27.5 is 8.5, and half of 8.5 is 4.25, so the side overhang is a little over that 4.25 inch drop and the lengths match. Hailey also says any throw width and length between 50 and 70 inches can still be called a throw, and that a tall recipient needs a throw length of at least 72 inches.
The full row is unsettled on that page. The chart says 85 by 108 inches. The prose says a full or double quilt is 80 by 108 inches. Both numbers are on the page. Treat them as two published options, then measure the bed.
Queen and king on this second chart are the long-hang sizes. A queen of 90 by 108 inches on a 60 by 80 inch mattress has 15 inches of side drop, because 90 minus 60 is 30 and half of 30 is 15, and 28 inches of extra length, because 108 minus 80 is 28. A king of 110 by 108 inches on a 76 by 80 inch mattress has 17 inches of side drop, because 110 minus 76 is 34 and half of 34 is 17, and the same 28 inches of extra length. Hailey also says a 76 by 80 inch quilt covers a king mattress with the edges at the mattress edge.
What 72 by 90 inches actually is
72 by 90 inches is the packaged batting size Honeybegood lists for a twin, next to a quilt size of 65 by 88 inches. Generations lists the same twin batting size, 72 by 90 inches, and the same pattern for the other beds: crib batting 45 by 60, full 81 by 96, queen 90 by 108, and king 120 by 120. Hailey's twin quilt is 70 by 90 inches, two inches narrower than that batting package, because 72 minus 70 is 2, and the same length. So a finished quilt of 72 by 90 inches is close to Hailey's twin quilt and matches the twin batting package, not Honeybegood's finished twin quilt.
Queen, full, twin, baby, and lap
A queen mattress is 60 by 80 inches. A full mattress is 54 by 75 inches. The queen mattress is 6 inches wider and 5 inches longer. The quilt rows are not a fixed gap. Honeybegood's queen quilt is 86 by 93 inches and its full quilt is 80 by 88 inches. Hailey's queen quilt is 90 by 108 inches, with a full quilt listed as both 85 by 108 and 80 by 108 on the same page. Pick the drop you want, then add it to the mattress, rather than buying a label.
A full quilt fits a twin bed in the plain sense that it covers the mattress. Honeybegood's full quilt is 80 by 88 inches. A twin mattress is 38 by 75 or 39 by 75 inches. The full quilt is wider and longer than that mattress, so it covers the twin and hangs farther than a twin quilt of 65 by 88 or 70 by 90 inches. It will look generous, not tailored to the twin.
A baby quilt has no mattress row on these charts. Hailey says a useful baby size is 30 by 40 inches and that there is no standard baby quilt size. A crib quilt is the mattress-based small size: 36 by 52 inches on Hailey's chart, over a crib mattress of 27.5 by 52 inches, or 39 by 54 inches on Honeybegood's chart, over a crib mattress of 28 by 52 inches. If the quilt should last past the infant stage, Hailey suggests moving up to crib or throw.
Lap is not a row on the Honeybegood, Hailey, or Generations charts captured here. Throw is the non-bed category. Hailey suggests 50 by 65 inches and says a width and length between 50 and 70 inches can still be a throw. For a lap you sit under, start with that throw range and lengthen it if the person is tall. Hailey's own marker for a tall recipient is a throw length of at least 72 inches.
Comforter, coverlet, and bedspread
Generations separates three hangs. A comforter covers the mattress and has no pillow tuck. A coverlet covers the mattress and the box spring and includes a 10 inch pillow tuck. A bedspread almost reaches the floor and also includes a 10 inch pillow tuck. Honeybegood's 13 inch extra length is closer to a comforter. Hailey's 28 inch extra length on queen and king is closer to a coverlet, with room to turn over a pillow and still hang at the foot.
After you choose the finished size, Generations says to add about 6 to 8 inches to both the width and the length for batting and backing. Honeybegood says to add about 6 inches to the width and to the length for a minimum batting size, and to ask a longarm quilter before you add more. The backing guide turns that allowance into yardage. The binding guide turns the finished perimeter into a strip count.
The second-ranked page, Sienna Living, is an Australian bedding chart in centimetres. Use a US chart for a US bed.
These rows are published guidelines, not a measurement of your frame. A thick mattress or a topper uses drop that the chart counted as hang. Measure length, width, and depth, then add the overhang you want on the sides and at the foot.

What size to make a king size quilt?
On a US king mattress of 76 by 80 inches, a cover-the-mattress quilt is 76 by 80 inches. A quilt with about 13 inches of side drop is about 104 by 93 inches. A longer hang is 110 by 108 inches.
What size quilt is 72x90?
72 by 90 inches is the twin packaged batting size on two captured charts, not their finished quilt size. One quilt chart lists a twin quilt at 70 by 90 inches.
What are the sizes of a twin-size quilt?
Published twin quilts on the captured charts are 65 by 88 inches and 70 by 90 inches. The twin mattress under them is 38 by 75 or 39 by 75 inches.
Can a full size quilt fit a twin bed?
Yes. A full quilt of 80 by 88 inches covers a twin mattress of 38 by 75 or 39 by 75 inches. The side drop will be deeper than a twin quilt's drop.
What is the difference between a lap quilt and a throw quilt?
The captured charts do not list a lap size. Throw is the non-bed size on the Hailey Stitches chart, with a suggested 50 by 65 inches and a range of 50 to 70 inches.
What size should a baby quilt be?
There is no single baby size on these charts. One guide suggests 30 by 40 inches for a baby quilt and 36 by 52 inches for a crib quilt.
