How a starburst quilt is put together

A starburst quilt is not one block. The pages that loaded for this search build it in three different ways: half-square triangles set in quadrants, squares and rectangles with straight seams, or paper-pieced units sewn on a printed line. Pick one route and cut only for that route. A half-square triangle chart will not build the paper-pieced block, and the paper-pieced block will not use the 10 inch squares in the triangle version.

Half-square triangles, set in quadrants

Ye Olde Sweatshop sewed a Missouri Star-style starburst from half-square triangles and worked in quadrants, the way the shop tutorial directed. The shop version that post followed uses 10 inch squares, a border, and a square layout. The blogger changed the unit to a 6 inch finished half-square triangle and made a rectangle, 10 blocks across by 12 rows down, finishing at 60 inches by 72 inches. The reason for the change is on the page: a smaller unit kept the quilt near 60 inches wide and still read as a burst.

For a two-color version of that 6 inch unit, the same post says you need 60 squares of each color. A generous 7.25 inch square, trimmed after sewing, came to 2.4 yards of each fabric in that math, and the writer bought extra rather than cut it close. The two-tone quilt used 240 half-square triangle pieces, 120 of each fabric. Those counts belong to a 6 inch unit in a 10 by 12 grid. They are not the count for a 10 inch square version.

The layout rule that keeps the burst even is on that page: keep the row counts equal, or the star leans. Plot the quadrants before you sew. A half-square triangle guide covers the mark, sew, and trim step this route assumes.

Robert Kaufman's Starburst is a different triangle quilt, and the fabric page lists it at 50 inches by 60 inches. The pattern PDF builds the top from half-square triangles, four-patch units, and flying geese, with a 1/4 inch seam unless a step says otherwise. Copyright on the file is 2025, for individual use. It is a free pattern under the name Starburst. It is not labeled Midnight Starburst.

Squares and rectangles

Stitchin Heaven's Stellar Starburst, designed by Marilyn Foreman, is a third construction. The listing says the blocks are made from squares and rectangles, with no Y-seams, and that the quilt finishes at 72 inches square. The shop prices the pattern at $27.95. That page is a product listing. It tells you the units and the finished size. It is not a cutting chart you can sew from without the pattern.

This route asks for straight seams and square cuts. If you already piece rail fences or simple grids, this is the starburst that matches that skill. It does not ask you to paper piece or to trim a pile of half-square triangles.

Paper-pieced units

Generations Quilt Patterns builds a Starburst block from two units: a triangle in a square, and a corner beam. You sew on the printed line. The sample block on the page is 9 inches finished. The same chart lists 6 inch, 12 inch, and 18 inch finished blocks, and the page tells you to print at 100 percent and check the 1 inch square on the sheet. No specialty ruler is required. The skill is paper piecing: a short stitch, press after each patch, and a print that measures true. The foundation paper piecing guide is the place to learn that stitch before you print a stack of these units.

Sew Much Moore shows another paper-pieced starburst, designed by Jenifer Dick. The pattern size on that page is 36 inches by 51 inches. Each block finishes at 15 inches. The block is four sections around a nine-patch. The page describes the pattern as suitable for a confident beginner who can sew a straight line, and it says the pattern lives in a book, not as a free file on the post. Cutting is strips of two colors. You still need the book for the piece sizes.

What to gather

Route Units A size from the opened page Skill
Triangle burst half-square triangles in quadrants 60 by 72 inches, or 50 by 60 inches trim a half-square triangle
Squares and rectangles squares and rectangles 72 inches square straight seams
Paper-pieced block triangle in a square, corner beam 9 inch sample, also 6, 12, and 18 inch finished sew on a printed line
Paper-pieced sections four sections around a nine-patch 15 inch block, pattern 36 by 51 inches straight line on paper

Fabric yardage follows the route. Do not buy 2.4 yards of two fabrics unless you are making the 6 inch, 10 by 12 triangle quilt that figure belongs to. The Stellar listing and the Kaufman PDF each have their own amounts, and this page does not merge them.

Free patterns, and the Midnight Starburst question

The free Starburst files this guide opened are Robert Kaufman's pattern and the paper-pieced block patterns linked from the Generations tutorial, including the corner-beam and triangle-in-a-square sheets on that page. Ye Olde Sweatshop is a free construction note for a triangle burst, with the shop tutorial named as the source of the 10 inch square method. Sew Much Moore is a sew-along for a book pattern. Stitchin Heaven is a pattern for sale.

None of those status-200 pages is titled Midnight Starburst. A search result that might have been that named design did not return a readable page. If you need the design that uses the name Midnight Starburst, use a page that prints that name. This guide will not treat a different Starburst as if it were that one.

A different quilt, if you want a star and not these routes

The north point quilt is coming soon, priced at $8.99.

That offer is a different design. It is not a starburst, and it is not a substitute for the free files linked above.

One limit of this advice: the triangle counts from the 60 by 72 inch quilt do not transfer to the 50 by 60 inch Kaufman pattern or to the 72 inch square listing. Same word, different units. Sew the route whose page you have open.

Is there a free midnight starburst quilt pattern available?

Not in the pages this guide could read. The free Starburst files that did load are Robert Kaufman's pattern, listed at 50 by 60 inches, and the paper-pieced Starburst block patterns on Generations Quilt Patterns. Neither page uses the name Midnight Starburst.

How is a starburst quilt put together?

It depends which starburst you mean. One route is half-square triangles set in quadrants. One is squares and rectangles. One is paper-pieced triangle-in-a-square and corner-beam units.

What skill does each starburst route need?

Half-square triangles need a consistent seam and a trim. Squares and rectangles need straight seams. Paper piecing needs a short stitch and a print at full scale. Pick the route that matches the sewing you already do.

What finished sizes show up in these patterns?

Opened pages list 50 by 60 inches, 60 by 72 inches, 72 inches square, a 15 inch block, and a 9 inch sample block, among others. They are different quilts.
