Halloween Quilt Patterns: Palette, Simple Blocks, and Free Tutorials

Published 2026-10-15. Updated 2026-10-15.
A Halloween quilt reads from contrast and a simple repeat. Use orange, black, and a light fabric, or a candy-corn mix of gold, violet, gray, and black, and set them as squares, strips, or strip-pieced triangles. Three free lessons cover that plan: pumpkin, witch-hat, and bat blocks that finish at 6 inches, a candy-corn triangle quilt that finishes at 54 by 72 inches, and a directory of free lap patterns that includes strip quilts and a disappearing nine patch.
Palette that reads as Halloween
Orange, black, and white or cream is the direct palette on the Quilting Daily blocks: an orange pumpkin on a light ground, a black hat, gray bats, and a light moon. The page also reaches into a scrap stash for green when the precut roll has none. Value does the work. A light orange next to a light cream will not read as a pumpkin from across the room.
Bryan House Quilts uses a wider candy-corn and autumn set: mint green, gold, gray, violet, and black, with light, medium, and dark in the same top so the triangles separate from the background. That page also says fall colors let the quilt stay out past Halloween. Novelty prints of witches, houses, or skeletons can join the mix if a strong contrast solid or blender sits behind them. The background on that quilt is 2½ yards of a solid or blender that contrasts with the prints.
The honest limit: a palette name is not a contrast test. Hold the orange next to the black and the cream, step back, and keep the trio only if each edge still shows. A print with orange, black, and cream already in one large motif can swallow a simple block.
Squares, strips, and triangles
Squares are the plain Halloween block. Quilting Daily's pumpkin is stitch-and-flip on squares and rectangles, and the set of three blocks is planned to finish at 6 inches. The page notes that a 6-inch finish means some patches are cut under 2 1/2 inches, so a precut strip has to be trimmed. Pinked edges on a strip roll change the width. Measure the strip before you trust the printed width.
Those three blocks are a pumpkin, a witch hat, and moons with bats. Drop them into a wall hanging, a table runner, a bag, or a sampler. They are not a bed chart. For a grid of plain squares in Halloween cloth, a nine patch is enough. The nine patch quilt pattern is the grid. A disappearing nine patch, named as a free Halloween lap quilt on the Quilt Therapy directory, is the same squares cut apart and turned. The method is in the disappearing nine patch guide. Scrap squares from leftover Halloween prints are in the scrap quilt patterns guide.
Strips are the next step up. Quilt Therapy's directory names a modern strip quilt and a colorful strip pumpkin among its free lap patterns. Bryan House Quilts builds the candy-corn top from strips first: 14 fat quarters, or 3½ yards of assorted prints, cut into 2½-inch strips, sewn in sets of three from light to dark, then cut into triangles. The background is 2½ yards. The finished quilt is 54 by 72 inches, laid out in 12 rows of print triangles alternating with background triangles. The page says you need 22 strip sets to get 5 triangles from each, and at least 108 print triangles. Press so the bias edges do not stretch. Square the top by trimming the outer half of the triangles.
A plus-sign block and a lattice are also on that directory, if you want squares with a cross or a grid instead of triangles. A panel with a strip border is the short path when the date is close. It is a different project from the pieced blocks above.
A square baby quilt is a different project from a Halloween top.

Add the three Quilting Daily blocks and the Bryan House triangle quilt, which are free lessons with cuts, not only directory lines. If a directory link is dead, the name and designer are still enough to search the designer's own site. Check the designer's page before you pay anyone else for a pattern the directory marks free.
What colors read as Halloween on a quilt?
Orange, black, and a light neutral read as Halloween when the values differ. A candy-corn palette of mint, gold, gray, violet, and black also reads, if light, medium, and dark sit next to each other.
Which simple blocks work for a Halloween quilt?
Squares and stitch-and-flip units that finish at 6 inches, strip sets cut into triangles, a plus sign, and a disappearing nine patch. Novelty prints can sit in the squares. The block does the reading when the print is plain.
Where are free Halloween quilt tutorials?
Quilting Daily publishes three free blocks: a pumpkin, a witch hat, and moons with bats. Bryan House Quilts publishes a free candy-corn triangle quilt. Quilt Therapy lists a directory of free lap patterns, including strip quilts and a disappearing nine patch.
How much fabric for a simple Halloween throw?
Bryan House Quilts' candy-corn quilt finishes at 54 by 72 inches and calls for 14 fat quarters, or 3½ yards of assorted prints, plus 2½ yards of background. That is one triangle quilt, not every Halloween top.
